THRIVE! - Creating a Replicable Model of Recovery for Rural and Small Urban Communities

Curt Baker is an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Frostburg State University located in western Maryland. Curt is the program coordinator for the University’s Master’s in Educational Leadership Program, and teaches doctoral- and Master’s-level courses in leadership, research methods, strategic planning, finance, and human resources in the Department of Educational Professions.
Curt earned his Ed.D. in Organizational Change and Leadership at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education. His dissertation examined the adequacy of college and career readiness guidance in public schools in helping students navigate the "school-to-work," "school-to-military," and "school-to-post-secondary education or training" pipelines.
Curt received his Master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. His Bachelor of Arts degree was earned at the University of Southern California, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and first in his graduating class. As part of his undergraduate program, Curt completed studies in economics, sociology, and international relations in England at the London
School of Economics and Political Science.
As an educational leader, Curt has been a senior executive in four school districts. He has twice served as a Superintendent of Schools. He has also provided leadership as a Deputy Superintendent and as a Chief Financial Officer. Additionally, Curt has served as an elected School Board member in one of Pennsylvania’s highest performing public school systems.
In the private sector, Curt has worked as a strategic planner and negotiator for a global oil company, as a management consultant leading transformational change efforts in a wide range of organizations, and as an entrepreneur.
Curt founded and served as head coach for two high school rugby programs that fielded both boys and girls teams. More than 50 student-athletes who played for Curt went on to play competitively for their collegiate sides.
Curt and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 35 years. They have two grown boys, and were recently blessed with the birth of their first grandchild. They also have two rescue dogs (George and Hecuba) who, to put it mildly, are a handful.
