Rafael Alberto Mendez Romero, Ph.D.

    He has been a professor at various universities in Bogotá. He was an honorary collaborating professor at the Universidad de Valladolid during the years 2014 and 2015. Since January 2017 he has been the Coordinator of the Mathematics Service of the Universidad del Rosario. At the present time he also acts as the Coordinator of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Program. In 2018, he was elected as distinguished professor of this university.

    Dr. Méndez-Romero obtained his undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería Julio Garavito (2008), a specialization degree in Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Sergio Arboleda (2009), a Master’s degree in Mathematical and Computational Modeling at the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain, (2013) and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at the latter University (2015, dissertation cum laude). In both the master’s and the Ph.D. courses he received the award for outstanding work for his academic performance and for the presentation and defense of the best theses of his graduating class. During the preparation of his doctoral thesis he was a visiting researcher at Kennesaw State University (Georgia, USA), where he collaborated in the research groups on advanced methods of qualitative research and mathematics education. He has also been a guest researcher in the framework of postdoctoral stays at that American university.

    His lines of research are mathematics education, teacher training, models of teacher professional competencies and teacher excellence, social justice in mathematics and technological mediation in education, among others.
